Friday, June 22nd

We slept in a little until 9:20, sure felt good after our long day yesterday. Jeryl researched the restaurants in the area looking for something interesting and she found one called the Route 50 Diner. We decided to check it out for lunch. We thought it might be in an old train car but were surprised to see it was in a mansion like house. I guess it's a family resort and that is their restaurant. It's right inside the entrance to the house/hotel.

Each booth had a small touch screen on which you could watch retro music videos, cartoons and tv shows. We saw a Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash video, a Popeye cartoon, and the Adams Family and Lucy shows. The food was ok, we got their signature hamburger and chicken sandwich but it really wasn't anything special.

As we walked back to our car, we noticed this big tank, right next to someone's house. We're not sure if it's meant to be a joke or if someone really likes maple syrup. lol.

After lunch we drove through most of Ocean City and into Delaware. We saw Bethany Beach and Rehoboth Beach but didn't get out at either as a storm came up. There was quite a lightening and thunder storm and many of the town streets were flooded. Along the way we went through Fenwick Island State Park and saw a very tall, old tower. Jeryl started laughing and said she saw some vultures in the window of one of the towers so on the way back, we stopped and took a picture. The towers were used during the Civil War as a lookout. If you look real close, maybe you can see 2 vultures in the top, left window.
Because it was raining, we turned around at the Rehoboth beach "tourist" area and headed back to Ocean City. We decided to get a picture of the famous Sacramento Route 50 sign that hangs above the bridge going out of Ocean City. It's our goal city on the opposite end of Route 50, 3073 miles away! Here's a pic of the sign and one of Jeryl standing below it.
We first parked in the same pay lot as last night and then walked about 3 blocks to the bridge to get the pictures. Luckily we both took our rain jackets because it then started to pour. We took refuge in the overhang of a 7-11 Store for about 20 minutes until it slowed down. Then we headed back to the boardwalk area for some ice cream. It again started raining so we ate our ice cream cones under a store overhang and when the rain let up, we went down to the beach for one last time. We walked over some rocks and under the pier and in the water. We also looked for shells or rocks but the water was coming in and out so fast, we didn't have time to grab much.
Finally we headed back to the car about 5pm and took one last picture near a Ripley's Believe it or Not.
In the morning we'll get up and leave by 6am to head to DC. I think it's only a 2 hour drive but we are staying at our first KOA and they have a shuttle into DC and it leaves at 9 so we need to be there early enough to check in and catch the shuttle. That will be great not having to drive in to the city but then we will also be doing a lot of walking tomorrow. So stay tuned for that great adventure in DC, on tomorrow night's blog (if our Internet connections is good at the KOA). Thanks as always for reading and following us. Happy Trails, and here's one last bird's eye view of Ocean City, Maryland.
